    April 9, 2012 What We’ve Been up to…

Well, aside from welcoming our second child into the world, we’ve been getting prepared for another epic wedding season.  We’ve changed a few things around, all for the better of our business and those most important to our business, our wonderful clients.  We’ve upgraded some gear, and will be shooting with the brand spankin’ new 5D Mark III, and have done a complete re-haul on our workhorse PC computers – yes we use PCs – they are actually quite lovely and almost as pretty as a MAC.  We are actually Apple people though, with two iPhone 4S, and iPhone 3G, iPod Touch, and iPad in the house, as well as a MacBook Pro.  We are kind of gear heads ; )

We’ve also been busy shooting – and lagging far behind in the blogging department, with several engagement sessions, birthday parties, newborn, and family sessions in the hopper, as well as a few more weddings from last season that we’ve been keeping under wraps up to this point.

So what do you – our faithful blog readers have in store…photos photos photos – because that’s what everyone loves, including us.

So stay tuned for more to come!

January 30, 2012 Us Making the Pretty Pictures – Vancouver Wedding Photographers

A short time ago I saw a photograph online  - check it out, it is pretty funny.  So this got me thinking, what do Heather and I look like when we photograph people.

tourist art school graduate Us Making the Pretty Pictures Vancouver Wedding Photographers

I’m so glad you asked, well actually I asked, but someone out there might want to know anyway.  For the past 8 years we’ve been shooting wedding, engagements and portraits together, and we’ve never taken any photos of us actually shooting, until last year.  We made a decision at the start of 2011, that we would try to take at least one photo of the other person, at least once during every shoot.

The result…well… we didn’t get a frame from every shoot, mainly because its hard to remember to do it.  We get so engrossed with our subjects and surroundings, our brains racing for the next location, pose, shot, watching the light, waiting for the right breath of wind to blow past, dodging cars, (if you can dodge a car, you can dodge a ball) dogs and joggers, that we just plain forgot…a lot.  But we did manage to get a few, so we thought we’d share.  What we learned, apparently I goof off with the groom… a lot, and Heather, well she has a little bit of Art School Graduate in her.  Check them out, and as always, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section , and don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook either. Come on, its either Facebook or do some work/study/laundry, and no one wants to do laundry.

January 6, 2012 From Our Family to Yours!

Christmas and New Years is such a wonderful time of year. The air is crisp and smells like snow, people hustle about from place to place in search of that perfect gift, and Starbucks has red cups and they put peppermint in everything!  But most importantly, it is a time for us to see our friends and family.  As Wedding photographers for the past 8 years, we sometimes don’t get to spend much time with our loved ones, you know who you are, often enough from May to October, so come Christmas, we’re ready to  reconnect and spread some holiday cheer.

Every year is special, but this year our daughter, Bowen, is going to be almost 2 years old!  What does that all mean…well hopefully not too many “No’s” or temper tantrums, but more importantly, she’s figured out that Christmas is a pretty great time of year.  All those presents to open, some were even hers, and she usually found something under the tree wrapped up in pretty paper with reindeer or candy canes (which is her new favourite thing in the world by the way) and decided to make it her own anyway.  Our little monkey will be turning two this February, and we can’t get enough of her.

The other big news for 2012 is that we are expecting our second little monkey, or as we have named Heather’s bump, ‘Lemon’.  Why lemon you ask?  Well, Heather has an iPhone app for pregnancy that tells you every week how big the baby is compared to a fruit or vegetable, and one day it was as big as a lemon, and it just stuck after that.  We’re very excited to welcome this new addition to our family this March, and look forward to showing him/her the world.

So what’s left to say, other than Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and we can’t wait for all that 2012 brings. To our 2012 brides and grooms, we’re refreshed, recharged, and ready for ‘ya! Now, let’s go take some pretty pictures! icon smile From Our Family to Yours! Chris + Heather

    April 13, 2011 Spring Cleaning!

Don’t know about you, but once in a while a simple rearranging of a closet turns into a complete wardrobe (and sometimes philosophical) overhaul. It was time. And we knew it. 2010 was an especially busy year for us, and we know that unfortunately our blog, like our closets, had been neglected because of it.  Not only that, our website hadn’t been updated in forever, and we had all these ideas that were swimming around with no pool in sight. But not anymore. The time has come. icon smile Spring Cleaning!

Although our old blog and website had served us well, it just didn’t seem to get us excited anymore. Sure it worked fine, and displayed images in a big bold way, we just felt limited within its design. There are so many new ideas we have for Spark, and they just don’t fit within our old site. It was time for an overhaul, and with all the changes we have in the works for Spark this year, it just felt right to start with a blog and website revamp. So that’s where we’ve been. icon wink Spring Cleaning!

Of course, this also has involved a whole new learning curve, and hours and hours of planning, writing, and head-scratching, and a few too many late night caffeine fixes. But we are getting closer, and thankfully we have had clients who have been patiently awaiting their Spark Blog face-time, trusting us that there is something great in store for them once we are finished.

So, thanks for your patience. The new site and blog are coming along, and with plenty of new images, a new blog approach, new venues, new clients, new Sessions with existing clients, new photo session approaches, new industry friends, and even some new Albums and products to add to our line-up, we can’t wait to share.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, we’d love you to become a FAN of Spark on Facebook! And if you’d like, FRIEND us too. After our outstanding experience with the living angels at BC Women and Children’s Hospital before our daughter Bowen was born last year, we’d like to donate $5 for every new FAN on our Spark Photography Fan Page between now and June 1st.

See you when the dust settles, and everything is squeaky clean! icon smile Spring Cleaning!

    October 25, 2008 New Orleans – Part 2 – Preservation Hall

We’ve always been fans of good music, all kinds really, but have never been into that much Jazz, but we thought we’d better check it out while in New Orleans.

Sunday night we headed out to Preservation Hall. The Hall, built in 1750, was created to protect and honour New Orleans Jazz, and hosts a live band seven nights a week.

We made our way into one of the darkest rooms we’ve ever seen, to be greeted with musicians playing the best jazz we’ve ever heard.  The room was filled with an incredible amount of history, check out a few images from the night.

We’ve got tons more to share, including more vacation pictures, plus lots of stuff from our workshop, and oh yeah, don’t foget to ask Heather about seeing Brad Pitt!

    October 25, 2008 New Orleans – Part 1 – French Quarter

As some of you may know, we recently travelled to New Orleans for a little late season vacation. Well, it was kind of a working holiday, as we attended the Image X workshop and spent a couple of days photographing models in the French Quarter with some of our favorite photographers. We did also find a few spare moments to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary, and have a little R and R

Our hotel, the Omni Royal Orleans was great, three blocks to the Mississippi River, right in the heart of the French Quarter, surrounded by restaurants and shops.  There was even a VW parked out front to make us feel at home.

Our view, the Louisiana State Supreme Court.

From the rooftop pool at night, in one direction, the newer skyscapers of the Business District…

and in the other direction, the French Quater.

The French Quarter is jam packed with history and character.  Just check out some of the doors on the street.

We were also lucky enough to only be three blocks from Cafe Du Monde where we could get our morning, and sometimes evening, Beignets. These tasty doughnuts were drowned in icing sugar, and it was impossible to eat them without becoming a powdery mess (even with lots of practice!).

Plus this little guy on Bourbon Street – I tried to get his gold, but he ran off.
