May 30, 2011 Kristie + Mike = A Morning at the Beach Engagement Session

Great light, a beautiful couple, and a gorgeous location. All of this adds up to a magical morning Engagement Session at the Beach, and some very happy photographers! Strolling around that morning it felt like we had the place all to ourselves, and despite the early start, Kristie and Mike were so relaxed, and up for anything.  This included negotiating the beach trails with some gorgeous heels, dealing with the intense morning sun and wind off the water, going off the beaten path on more than a few occasions, and most importantly, for letting their love shine through. Enjoy your sneak peek!

May 27, 2011 Karen + Pedram = Wedding in One Frame

I think there is a moment for most couples on their Wedding Day when the whirlwind of the day begins to ease, and they can just enjoy being together, and soak it all in. Just before heading into Seasons in the Park for their elegant dinner reception, the long awaited sun flooded through the gardens, and we had a great time doing some portraits in the golden light before the festivities got underway. Here is just one of our favorite moments for Karen and Pedram’s Wedding for their “Wedding in One Frame”:

May 27, 2011 Jaclyn + Derek = Wedding in One Frame

This year, in addition to full length features on our couple’s Weddings, we are going to also give a little sneak peek into their day while we are busy whittling the hours away in our editing chairs. Trying to come up with just one image to highlight a Wedding is a challenge, so to help our quest for the “Wedding in One Frame”, we think back on one of the moments we felt our couple was really in their moment. For Jaclyn and Derek, one of these moments happened early into our portrait time together after the ceremony and family portraits were completed, and they were able to just be together, newly married, at the majestic front gates leading up to their venue at Swan-E-Set Bay Resort.

    May 26, 2011 Alicia + Josh = A Delightful Gastown Engagement Session

Part of our excitement over photographing so many couples over the years, is that we’ve been offered a sneak peek into each couple’s lives together, and had the honor and opportunity to document and create memories alongside them.  This year, we’ve made it a point to encourage our couples to take full advantage of their Engagement Session, and make the Session as personal as possible for them. After all, it is nice to have some great images of the two of you together, but how great would it be to also have the ability to incorporate other aspects of who you are as a couple? A favorite location, activity, pet, hobby, or a token nod to an everyday occurrence in your lives together that you’d love to remember in 30 years?

What this meant to Josh and Alicia, was to incorporate some of their favorite things – a cozy location, a love for color (yellow and pink specifically!), and their love of post it notes.  What it means to us, is that we can’t wait for their Wedding Day! icon smile Alicia + Josh = A Delightful Gastown Engagement Session

May 25, 2011 Amanda + Phil = Stanley Park Sunset Session

There is a beautiful window of time for photography when the sun is dropping low on the horizon, and soft golden light illuminates all it touches. It is a great time to get outside and enjoy this magical glow, and on this perfect night we were lucky enough to have an Engagement Session scheduled with Amanda and Phil. Of course, by being outside at this time of night, sometimes it means missing out on a hockey game, but Amanda and Phil were still showing their support for the Canucks even if they couldn’t watch the game in real time. Hockey is really important to them as a couple, and it was cute to include this into their Session. While we were down on the beach, we even heard the roar of Vancouverites across the water cheering so we knew they were doing well, and we all raced home afterwards to start up our PVRs.  :)

May 20, 2011 Krista + James = Nitobe Memorial Garden Engagement Session

Pulling up to the Nitobe Memorial Garden for Krista and James’ Engagement Session, the sky finally opened up after a morning of rain (see Carlyn and Ben’s Engagement Session below), and we couldn’t wait to explore this gorgeous location with them.  Although Krista and James went to UBC, they never had the chance to visit the gardens until thinking of a special location for our Session. I’m so glad they decided to do their Session here, because this place seems like the perfect fit for them. Elegantly refined, peaceful, natural, and with an extra helping of sweetness, it was a dream to photograph. After our time in the Garden, we found a few more gorgeous spots around UBC including a “wishing tree” where people had left notes in a tree with their hopes and dreams. Now come on, how can you beat that as a setting for two people in love? icon wink Krista + James = Nitobe Memorial Garden Engagement Session

May 19, 2011 Carlyn + Ben = False Creek Engagement Session

Not even bouts of epic downpour and gusty winds could stop this Engagement Session. “After all”, said Carlyn, “we do live in Vancouver, what’s a little rain?” icon wink Carlyn + Ben = False Creek Engagement Session

Well, we got more than a little rain, but we also had Millennium Village almost all to ourselves, which gave us a great opportunity to introduce Carlyn and Ben to our cameras in a more private setting. Looking back at the images from that grey morning, I’m glad (OK, don’t hate me guys!) that it rained! Snuggled under an umbrella at the very spot where Ben proposed, finding access to a private rooftop garden that we wouldn’t have shot at otherwise, all while the soft glow of diffused light filtered through the clouds, made for a beautiful morning. And after all, it is Vancouver at its finest! icon wink Carlyn + Ben = False Creek Engagement Session

May 16, 2011 Jaime + John = Spring Hycroft Mansion Wedding!

One of the great things about shooting Weddings in Vancouver, is that there are so many gorgeous venues for a Wedding. Each unique, and full of it’s own character, and sometimes, like we found when shooting at Hycroft Mansion, the setting is such a strong influence on the Wedding that it shapes the vision for the day. For Jaime and John, their Wedding was full of simple elegance, with a touch of a daydream-like whimsy. Beautiful, soft, and sweet. In short, a perfect day.

Here is how Hycroft met us that sleepy Spring morning…

JJ 001 Jaime + John = Spring Hycroft Mansion Wedding!

Just loved how the magnolias were perfect that day…

Alongside the strong masculine lines of the mansion, are the most pretty and feminine rooms. Truly a delight, and we were so excited to start the day!

Speaking of masculine, here are the guys! icon wink Jaime + John = Spring Hycroft Mansion Wedding! John chose his brother to be his best man, and you could tell that they have such a great friendship.

Loved that the glass doorknob into the solarium where Jaime was getting ready was the perfect shade of purple to match her Wedding colors.

Chris noticed this tryptic painting in the foyer, and was inspired to try something similar with the gorgeous Jaime.

JJ 019 Jaime + John = Spring Hycroft Mansion Wedding!

Then, on to their fun and emotional ceremony. Since having a daughter ourselves, I take an even closer look at the parents of the bride and groom on their Wedding Day. I love the range of emotion Jaime’s father showed in the few moments before the ceremony began, from excitement and anticipation, to the realization that one of the most special moments of her life was about to occur.

Also, the look on John’s face when he saw Jaime that day.

An indoor ceremony at Hycroft is stunning. The light pours in, and the room just glows.

Jaime and John’s officiant was hilarious! A real character, and such a treat!

And one of the last images from the day. One of the reasons why Jaime and John chose Granville Island for their Wedding Day Portrait Session was because the little JJ Bean coffee shop was where they warmed up with some hot chocolate on their first date. How fitting that J+J would end up here on their Wedding Day!

May 13, 2011 Jamie + John = A snowy Engagement Session in Gastown

Digging back in our archives to the snowy Engagement Session we had with Jamie and John in February, it seems almost fitting to be posting this now with the puzzling weather we’ve had lately – hail storms, horizontal rain, and gusty winds. All this lovely May weather we’ve been experiencing lately would be what most people would think a Session in February would be like, but instead, we had a blissful, almost entirely private Session in the usually busy location of Gastown, which was a nice introduction to get Jamie and John in front of our cameras for the first time.  After our first meeting with Jamie and John, Chris and I secretly hoped that we’d get to be the lucky photographers for this amazingly sweet couple’s Wedding at Hycroft Mansion in April. These two are down to earth, optimistic, compassionate towards others, and completely relaxed and at ease with each other, and we couldn’t wait to see these two lovelies tie the knot.  Their Wedding images will be up next week, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to sneak this post in beforehand to introduce you to them. Enjoy! H&C

May 12, 2011 Welcome to our new online home!

After many late nights spent working behind the scenes, our new Spark Photography website and blog is finally ready to go live tomorrow! We are so excited to be able to share our new ‘home’, and hope you’ll love exploring the new site. Also, with the new all-in-one site, you can update your bookmarks – our old blog at www.sparkphotography.ca/squarespace will soon be no more.  Instead, our blog is now living within our website, so everything is conveniently in one place for you at www.sparkphotography.ca.  This also includes:

    - Easy access to your personalized client site where you can view and update the Wedding information we have for you, as well as review the services and products you’ve booked including the photography agreement and payment details.  If you don’t remember your access code, just let us know and we’ll email it to you.

    - Direct access to the Spark Store. This was to answer a request we had lately from couples who wanted to set up a Wedding Registry with us, and wanted it to be easy for their friends and family to do so online.

    - Direct access to our online Client Galleries, so it will be easier for you to share images with friends and family. Just send them over to our site with your password, and it should be much easier for them now to figure out how to get where they need to go.

These are just a few of the new improvements, and we’ll be sharing in more detail in the weeks ahead. If you have comments or suggestions as you navigate through our site, please let us know. We realize that it may take a few days to iron out all the wrinkles, but if we have your help, hopefully this can be as seamless as possible. icon smile Welcome to our new online home!
